Internal Medicine

Our veterinary experts at East Hampton Veterinary Group are trained in a range of services to help keep your pet healthy and happy. From dermatology and allergy testing to endocrinology and cancer treatment, our special areas of expertise allow us to go deeper in understanding and treating your pet’s ailments and illnesses.

Dermatology

If your pet is suffering from a dermatological condition of the skin, hair or nails, we are here to provide relief.

It is not uncommon for our furry friends to be affected by skin and ear conditions caused by allergic reactions, parasites, infectious diseases and endocrine diseases. You can expect one of our experienced doctors to diagnose various conditions by taking skin scrapings, bacterial or fungal cultures, or ear or skin cytologies.

At East Hampton Veterinary Group, we are able to diagnose and treat environmental and food related allergens, skin cancer, chronic skin and ear infections, parasite infections such as mange and fungal infections such as ringworm.

Allergy Testing

Pets can have allergic reactions to various substances they touch, eat and breathe. Figuring out exactly what your pet is reacting to can be tricky and many times pets react to more than one substance at a time. Allergy testing may help identify the substances your pet is allergic to.

If you notice the following symptoms, your pet may be experiencing an allergic reaction:

  • Scratching and Chewing
  • Itchy, Scabbed, or Red Skin
  • Itchy Eyes
  • Itchy Ears and Ear Infections
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sneezing
  • Hot Spots

Types of allergens:

  • Contact allergens: grass/weeds, fleas, wool, and household cleaning products
  • Food allergens: wheat, grains, protein sources such as chicken, beef, and pork
  • Inhaled allergens: weeds, pollen, dust, dust mites, and mold spores

Contact us today for a comprehensive exam and diagnostic testing if you suspect your pet is suffering from allergens.

Endocrinology

The endocrine system creates and regulates your pet's hormones, which play a huge role in the overall functioning of their body. Hormones are responsible for various bodily functions ranging from appetite and metabolism to sexual functioning and temperature regulation.

Thyroid (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) and adrenal diseases, such as Cushing's or Addison's disease, are the most common endocrine disorders we see.

It is always best to catch symptoms early on. Look out for the most common signs including:

  • Excessive drinking or urination
  • Sudden weight loss or gain
  • Hair loss or growth
  • Unusual energy levels

Regular wellness laboratory testing can uncover many of these conditions before symptoms may be apparent in your pet.

Cancer Treatment

A cancer diagnosis can be scary, however, modern veterinary medicine is now allowing pets to live longer and more comfortable lives. Based on the type of cancer, as well as your pet's age, health status and unique needs, we will form the most comprehensive treatment plan for your furry friend.

Pets with cancer are typically treated by:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation Therapy

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy effects pets differently than humans. Oftentimes, these forms of therapy do not cause undesirable side effects such as hair loss and nausea. For the most effective treatment, we can discuss combining traditional and alternative treatment options.

We are fortunate to work closely with veterinary board-certified oncologists on Long Island and in NYC to ensure your pet receives the optimal care when diagnosed with cancer.
